The Economic Policy Institute (EPI) released a new study finding that child care workers are among the lowest paid workers in the country. According to the new analysis, the median hourly wage for child care workers is 39.3% lower than other workers.
Child care workers from around the country reacted to the new report:
- Tolanda Barnette: “I’m a professional, I’m not just a babysitter. I deserve $15 and union rights.”
- LiAnne Flakes: “I’ve been taking care of other families, making sure their needs are met, but you can’t even take care of your own needs. It is a struggle from day to day. Going to the grocery store is a luxury after I pay my bills.”
- Betty Henderson: “I’ve been that parent that couldn’t afford child care.”
